Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Gains knowledge about the classification and physicochemical properties of fuels.
  2. Can compare the properties of alternative engine fuels (natural gas, biodiesel, LPG, hydrogen, methanol, ethanol, etc.).
  3. Can calculate the emission rates of pollutants formed as a result of combustion.
  4. Can analyze the combustion processes in internal combustion engines based on their stages, evaluate the parameters affecting knock combustion, interpret pollutant emissions resulting from combustion within the framework of emission standards, and learn methods to reduce emissions.

Course DescriptionThe Fuels and Combustion course covers the chemical structures, classification, and properties of fuels used in engines, as well as the fundamental principles of combustion processes. The methods of obtaining fuels, types of alternative fuels, and their usage characteristics in engines are examined in detail. Theoretical knowledge is provided on combustion reactions, types of combustion, calculation of combustion products, and their environmental impacts.
Course Contents
WEEK TOPICS
1st Week The general classification of fuels (hydrocarbons) based on their chemical structure: Paraffins (Alkanes), normal paraffins, iso-paraffins, Olefins (Alkenes), mono and di-olefins, Naphthenes (cyclo-paraffins), Aromatics.
2nd Week Fuel production for engines: refining processes, fractional distillation, cracking, polymerization, and isomerization. The classification of refined fuels includes gasoline, kerosene, diesel, jet fuel, fuel oil, natural gas, and LPG.
3rd Week Fuel properties for spark ignition engines: knock resistance, volatility, octane number, additives. Some issues encountered during use are icing, vapor lock, and flash point.
4th Week Fuel properties for compression ignition engines: knock resistance, volatility, viscosity, aniline point, cetane number, cold filter plugging point, and additives.
5th Week Alternative engine fuels: hydrogen, natural gas, methanol, ethanol, LPG, and biodiesel.
6th Week Combustion and combustion equations: air/fuel ratio, air excess coefficient.
7th Week Types of combustion: complete combustion, theoretical complete combustion, incomplete combustion, partial incomplete combustion, and the analysis of combustion products.
8th Week Midterm exam.
9th Week Calculating combustion products using closed formulas and elemental composition.
10th Week Combustion in spark ignition engines: first phase, main phase, and final phase. Parameters affecting normal combustion. Knock combustion in gasoline engines and the factors influencing knock combustion.
11th Week Combustion in diesel engines: ignition delay and affecting factors. Combustion in diesel engines includes uncontrolled combustion, diffusion combustion, and afterburning.
12th Week Environmental effects of combustion reactions and emission standards.
13th Week Pollutant emissions from vehicles and methods to reduce pollutant emissions.
14th Week Efficiency analysis of combustion systems and applications for improving efficiency.
