At the end of this course, the students;
- Defines and compares the concepts of two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and virtual (digital) space within a semiotic and discursive framework.
- Critically analyzes the relationship between space and ideological, political, and cultural dynamics in the context of power, surveillance, gender, body politics, and collective memory.
- Deconstructs visual perception, emotional geographies, and the body-space relationship through contemporary art installations, architectural forms, and public space interventions.
- Analyzes the construction of space through critical and feminist semiotic methods in the context of gender, body politics, and power relations.
- Learns the spatialization techniques of data and information (emotional/critical mapping) in digital interfaces.
- Utilizes positive/negative space, depth, and spatial codes in design processes (graphic, interface, exhibition design) as conscious communication tools to reinforce the message.

| Course Description | Is a design merely a surface, or is it a living space that governs emotions and perceptions?
In this course, we trace the concept of "space"?from 2D surfaces to contemporary art installations, and from digital interfaces to extended reality (XR) environments. We explore space not just as a physical medium, but as a semiotic tool that generates meaning, a discursive field of power, and an intersection point for body and gender politics.
Through the lenses of semiology and critical discourse analysis, we decipher the ideology space carries, its connection to social/emotional memory, and how it shapes human perception. We learn to look at design not through an ordinary eye, but with a multi-layered, radical vision that shapes the future.
If this sparks your interest, join us to redefine space and explore the ideology of design from surface to extended reality. |
