Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Can utilize the fundamental elements and principles of design to create two-dimensional compositions.
  2. Can create meaningful visual arrangements using point, line, mass/tone, plane, space, and simple geometric forms.
  3. Can transform accidental visual patterns into deliberate design compositions through framing, selection, elimination, and intentional intervention.
  4. Can establish visual hierarchy using the principles of scale, proportion, emphasis, balance, contrast, rhythm, repetition, and unity.
  5. Can design abstract compositions that achieve perceptual unity by applying figure-ground relationships and Gestalt principles of perception.
  6. Can visualize concepts, emotions, states, and narratives through abstract forms, and articulate design decisions verbally and in writing.

Course DescriptionAs the first part of a two-semester foundation studio sequence, this course aims to introduce visual communication design students to fundamental design elements, composition principles, and visual perception processes through hands-on studio practices. Within the scope of the course, students experiment with point, line, mass/tone, plane, space, form, scale, proportion, emphasis, balance, contrast, rhythm, repetition, unity, figure-ground relationship, and Gestalt principles of perception through black-and-white, two-dimensional compositions. The course further aims to help students transition from accidental visual patterns to intentional design decisions, develop concepts and narratives through abstraction, generate alternatives, revise work based on critique, and articulate design rationales.
