Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Recall:Define and lists the basic anatomical structures of the outer, middle, and inner ear, auditory nerve, auditory pathways, and auditory cortex.
  2. Understanding:Explain the role of the outer and middle ear in sound transmission.
  3. Understanding:Explain the process of converting sound from mechanical energy to electrical signal in the cochlea.
  4. Understanding:Explain how the auditory nerve carries sound information.
  5. Understanding:Explain the basic function of the central auditory pathways.
  6. Application:Relate middle ear physiology to tympanometry results.
  7. Application:Relate cochlear physiology to the presence/absence of OAE.
  8. Application:Relate auditory pathway information to the general logic of ABR wave formation.
  9. Analysis:Differentiate peripheral and central auditory system structures according to their basic characteristics.
  10. Analysis:Compare the functions of inner and outer hair cells.
  11. Evaluation: Matche a basic audiological finding with the relevant part of the auditory system.

Course DescriptionThis course is designed to provide a theoretical understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system and what kind of evaluation methods we can use according to the functioning of the system in order to detect structural and functional problems in the most accurate way. Both testing the auditory system as a clinician and directing the patient to the treatment options and conducting scientific studies as an academician require a very good knowledge of the system we work on, that is, the structures and functioning system of the hearing system. Therefore, this course is one of the most basic courses of the undergraduate program.
