At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Explain the historical development of Turkish language teaching.
  2. Identify the methods and materials used in the Ottoman, Republican, and contemporary periods.
  3. Analyze language teaching policies, curricula, and approaches in their historical context.
  4. Interpret historical findings and apply them to modern Turkish language teaching.
  5. Evaluate academic research related to the history of Turkish language teaching.

Course DescriptionEvaluating Turkish as a mother tongue teaching from the beginning to the Tanzimat era, from the Tanzimat era to the Republic era and from the Republic era to the present day based on the main source works; reviewing managerial and scientific studies conducted for the protection, teaching and development of Turkish in the relevant periods; discussing relevant assessments in the light of field literature.

1st Week Course introduction, objectives, and expectations.
2nd Week Key concepts in language teaching history and perspectives.
3rd Week Teaching Turkish in the Ottoman era: madrasahs and Turkish for foreigners.
4th Week Turkish language teaching during the Tanzimat and Second Constitutional Era.
5th Week Language teaching approaches after the proclamation of the Republic.
6th Week The Alphabet Reform and the impact of language policies on teaching.
7th Week Turkish language teaching and curriculum changes between 1940-1980.
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Post-1980 Turkish language teaching: curricula and methodologies.
10th Week Historical development of textbooks in Turkish language teaching.
11th Week History of teaching Turkish to foreigners.
12th Week The role of technological developments in language teaching through history.
13th Week Modern Turkish language teaching: a historical review.
14th Week Problems and solutions with a historical perspective.
