Course DescriptionThis course focuses on the phenomenon of "international migration," which has increasingly entered the agendas of both contemporary societal and academic debates. First, within a historical framework, changing conceptualizations of migration?such as refugee migration, irregular migration, shuttle migration, and labor migration?will be discussed. When we speak of the history of migration, human history itself naturally emerges; however, with the establishment of nation-states, human mobility has acquired different meanings. Towards the end of the twentieth century, cross-border human mobility has confronted us loaded with vastly different meanings. The course will initially focus on these transformations. Subsequently, theoretical approaches to international migration and the general characteristics of international migration research will be studied. Given that international migration is today conceptualized through the geography of the nation-state, the relationship between international migration and space (city, neighborhood, transnational space) will be a particular focus within the framework of migration studies. In the following weeks, the actors of international migration (the state, civil society, and international community actors) and their politics, the political economy of migration, and immigrant conditions will be examined. Finally, state migration policies and their implications for the concepts of democracy and citizenship will be comparatively analyzed. In this direction, the United States and Canada on one side, and European countries on the other, will be examined. Turkey's migration policies will also be studied?both as a country of immigration and emigration?in light of the comparisons between America and Europe.
