Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Understand the production routes, classification, and key physical/chemical/mineralogical properties of supplementary cementitious materials and pozzolans,
  2. Identify relevant standards/specifications and interpret compliance data for supplementary cementitious materials used in Portland-cement-based systems,
  3. Explain how supplementary cementitious materials influence fresh and hardened concrete behaviour,
  4. Apply supplementary cementitious material knowledge to select appropriate mineral admixtures and propose suitable replacement levels for a given concrete application, considering performance, sustainability, and quality control needs.
Mode of DeliveryFace to face
PrerequisitesNo
Recommended Optional Programme ComponentsNone
Course DescriptionThis course covers concrete properties and the use of admixtures, considerations and precautions in the use of admixtures, admixture classification, air-entraining admixtures, water reducing admixtures, setting retarders, accelerators, pozzolans and other fine-grained mineral admixtures, natural pozzolans, fly ash, silica fume, ground blast furnace slag, various additives.
