Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Understands the basic principles of immunohistochemistry and identifies the basic components of immunohistochemical technique.
  2. Compares the techniques required for the preparation of a tissue before IHC staining and selects the appropriate one.
  3. Knows and applies all components of immunohistochemical staining technique.
  4. Accurately analyze immunohistochemical staining results and develop strategies to solve common problems.

Course DescriptionCourse Scope and Objectives: This course provides a comprehensive understanding of Immunohistochemistry (IHC), focusing on its applications in pathology and diagnosis. The course begins with an introduction to basic immunology, where students learn the fundamentals of the immune response, including antigens, antibodies, epitopes, and their interactions. These fundamental concepts are critical to understanding the principles behind IHC. Next, students explore the different components of IHC, such as the types of antibodies (monoclonal and polyclonal), the use of primary and secondary antibodies, and their roles in detecting specific antigens in tissue samples. Antigen retrieval techniques, blocking nonspecific binding, and applying chromogenic and fluorescent staining methods are covered extensively. Through hands-on laboratory activities, students develop the skills needed to perform these procedures on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens. They also learn to develop strategies to overcome these challenges by troubleshooting common IHC problems such as poor staining, nonspecific binding, and high background.
