At the end of this course, the students;
- Learns the definition of secondary metabolites in plants, biosynthesis pathways, and their importance in pharmacy.
- Recognize medicinal plants and drugs that carry important secondary metabolites in the field of pharmacy and health. Knows the diagnosis and quantification, effects, toxicities and interactions of total chemical substance groups (essential oil, total alcohol, iridoid, saponin, etc.) contained in drugs, makes analysis methods and evaluates the results.
- Learns the physicochemical properties of essential volatile and non-volatile terpenes, aromatic compounds, sterols and steroidal structures in pharmacy, their chemical structures, isolation from natural sources, purification, diagnosis and quantification methods. Know their usage, interactions and usage doses, make analysis methods related to their activity and toxicity, follow the publications in this field and evaluate the results in terms of human health.
- Knows the Pharmacopoeia and Monograph properties of the mentioned medicinal plants and drugs, and makes and evaluates the compatibility tests with appropriate methods.
- Knows the issues to be considered in the preparation of phytotherapeutics and cosmeceuticals in which secondary metabolites take place. Follows the current scientific publications in the field of phytotherapy applications and other complementary medicine, and evaluates the situation in our country.
- Based on the medicinal plants used by the people, he researches the new drug sources containing volatile and non-volatile substances scientifically and follows the publications.
- Has a basic knowledge of aromatherapy and phytotherapy. Knows the points to be considered in rational aromatherapy applications. Contributes to teamwork in treatment and protection of public health. It warns and informs the society to prevent unconscious and wrong practices.
