Course DescriptionThis course examines the basic concepts and tenets of the Frankfurt School, Phenomenology, Symbolic Interactionism, Rational Choice Theory, Structuration Theory, Field Theory, Post-structuralism, and Feminist Theory. This course introduces some of the canonical works in the aforementioned schools and aims to fulfill three interrelated purposes. First, it seeks answers to some of the most pressing questions in the field of contemporary social theory (i.e., how to react to structuralism; how to make sense of the relationship between human body, power and knowledge; how to theorize the self and the others; how to define the meaning of concept, model, theory and ideology?and how to construe their relationship). Second, it explores the context in which contemporary social theories occurred and the ways in which they are molded. Finally, it discusses the place and significance of contemporary social theories within the discipline of sociology and to what extent they are detached from classical social theories
