Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Comprehend the fundamental principles of hydroelectric power generation and its role in the energy market; determine the energy potential using topographic and hydrological data of a river basin,
  2. Dimension the HEPP components such as intake structures, conveyance channels/tunnels, settling basins, and forebays according to hydraulic principles and design criteria,
  3. Analyze water hammer and mass oscillation problems in penstocks; design surge tanks and determine necessary precautions against cavitation risk,
  4. Select the appropriate turbine type (Pelton, Francis, Kaplan, etc.) suitable for the head and discharge characteristics of the plant during the planning stage; comprehend the general layout and structural features of the powerhouse,
  5. Apply economic analysis (cost-benefit) methods for hydroelectric power plant projects; contribute to the interpretation of the technical and economic feasibility of the project,
  6. Evaluate the sustainability of HEPP projects during construction and operation phases.
