Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Identify, formulate, and analyze real complex engineering problems and develop appropriate solution strategies using engineering principles,
  2. Select and effectively apply modern engineering tools, techniques, skills, and computational methods necessary for engineering practice,
  3. Function effectively on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams, implement project management, and effectively communicate results through written reports and oral presentations,
  4. Design engineering systems, components, or processes that meet specified needs while considering realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, sustainability, and ethical factors.
Mode of DeliveryFace to face

Course DescriptionThe design process in civil engineering is an open-ended set of operations that ultimately create an object or system whose utility meets pre-defined engineering, economic and esthetic criteria. This creative process requires application of fundamental knowledge given in previous courses, innovation and consistent endeavor that is best implemented when more experienced engineers who serve as mentors continuously guide the student. The objective of these two successive courses (CE 412) is to introduce the students to the design environment that they are likely to encounter in practice. At the completion of each course, students working in groups under the guidance of a faculty member are required to produce a demonstrable concept, an output that conforms to the accepted norms of civil engineering. The work groups are required to present their work in detail to their peers, and to prepare a poster for Design Project Exhibition at the end of the spring semester where their work is succinctly summarized.
