Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Discuss the concepts of circular economy and the waste hierarchy in an architectural context; and identify approaches to extending the life cycle of materials and buildings (reuse, repair, adaptation, recycling, etc.).
  2. Understand that circularity can be addressed through architecture's different fields of knowledge (material/tectonics, space/built environment, theory/discourse, representation), and justify the disciplinary grounding of their own work.
  3. Formulate a research question appropriate to their chosen field of knowledge, design a method to address it, and write it as a research proposal
  4. Develop an output specific to their research design (for example, a prototype, a map, a theoretical text, or a digital model).
  5. Communicate their work in visual, written, and oral forms, in accordance with academic standards of presentation and documentation.

Course DescriptionThis course investigates, both theoretically and through practice, how the principles of the circular economy translate within the discipline of architecture. Against the limits of the linear take-make-waste model, it places at the center of inquiry those approaches that aim to extend the life cycle of materials and buildings, retain their value, and reassess resources. Within the course, circularity is treated as a multidimensional field of research that opens up the ways architectural knowledge is produced, evaluated, and transmitted to reconsideration: it is studied across a spectrum ranging from the physical properties and tectonic possibilities of materials, to the spatial organization of the built environment and of resource flows, from the aesthetic, ethical, and cultural discourses of circularity, to the forms of digital representation, documentation, and traceability of this knowledge. Combining a shared theoretical foundation with the methods of critical reading, field research, material investigation, and research-through-design, the course enables participants to transform a shared question into original research according to their own interests and areas of expertise.
