Course DescriptionThe aim of the course is to explore the Universal Design (UD) concept as a significant approach in the design of a sustainable built environment. It will introduce the history of UD that emerged from accessible, flexible, adaptable and inclusive design concepts and discuss how it contributes to sustainable environment. Within this context, the complementary approaches in UD and sustainable development principles will be explored with analysis and discussions on design examples from the built environment. Relevant national and international codes and standards will be reviewed to raise discussions about development of sustainable and universally accessible and safe built environments. Throughout the semester, the students will collaborate, work and make discussions on various topics and design problems to find solutions that satisfy sustainable universal design approach.
