Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. To learn the techniques and strategies of translation in Turkish and English. To this effect, mainly lexical studies and grammar are dealt with for recognition, consolidation, and production purposes in the context pertaining to the field concerned.
  2. To develop their reading comprehension in the source language as well as writing in the target language.
  3. To develop their listening and speaking skills through the evaluation of the translation products in class.

Course DescriptionThis is an upper-intermediate English for Specific Purposes translation course. It aims to equip students with the necessary skills in order to understand and identify the structural differences between English and Turkish, to recall previous knowledge on grammar and apply this knowledge to ESP content, to realize different uses of words in different contexts, to translate sentences of various structure and level of difficulty into the target language, considering important points about tone and content, to produce alternative translations for the words, phrases and structures given in the source language, and to enrich their field-specific vocabulary and to enhance their comprehension of written material.

1st Week Hafta 1: Introduction to and Comparison of English and Turkish sentence structure, word order
2nd Week Hafta 2: Translation of simple and compound English Sentences with reference to tenses, negation, parts of speech and subject-verb agreement, vocabulary input
3rd Week Hafta 3: Translation of simple and compound Turkish Sentences with reference to tenses, negation, parts of speech and subject-verb agreement
4th Week Hafta 4: Introduction to and comparison of passive voice and complex passive structures in both languages, vocabulary and translations from English sentences
5th Week Hafta 5: Translation into English (simple and complex passive constructions), vocabulary
6th Week Hafta 6: Input for Adjective Clauses, comparison of the structures in both languages, reduction of adjective clauses, vocabulary and translations into Turkish
7th Week Hafta 7: Translations of sentences with adjective clauses into Turkish, vocabulary revision, error correction exercises
8th Week Hafta 8: Mid-term week
9th Week Hafta 9: Translations of sentences with adjective clauses into English, vocabulary
10th Week Hafta 10: Translations of sentences with adjective clauses into English
11th Week Hafta 11: Introduction to Noun Clauses, ESP vocabulary, translation from English
12th Week Hafta 12: Translation of sentences with noun clauses into Turkish continues
13th Week Hafta 13: Translation of sentences with noun clauses into English
14th Week Hafta 14: Translation of sentences with noun clauses into English, error correction exercises, vocabulary revision
