At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Define the concept of multiculturalism in early childhood and explain its theoretical foundations.
  2. Analyze the effects of cultural diversity on various developmental areas of children.
  3. Explain ways to integrate multicultural education into early childhood education programs.
  4. Identify and apply methods to develop cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  5. Explain how prejudices form at an early age and develop strategies to reduce these biases.
  6. Analyze the roles of teachers, families, and educational environments in multicultural education; design multicultural classroom settings using culturally representative materials and activities.

Course DescriptionBy the end of this course, students will gain knowledge about the theoretical foundations of multiculturalism in early childhood, the impact on cultural diversity on children's developmental processes, the integration of multicultural education into early childhood programs, ways to develop cultural awareness and sensitivity, how biases are formed at an early age, the role of cultural representation in materials and activities, the roles of teachers and families in multicultural education, and the design of multicultural classroom environments.

1st Week Introduction and syllabus overview; Introduction to the concept of multiculturalism
2nd Week The concept of multiculturalism and its historical development
3rd Week Development of cultural identity in early childhood
4th Week The effects of cultural diversity on cognitive, emotional, and social development
5th Week Theoretical approaches to multicultural education (Banks, Nieto, Derman-Sparks, etc.)
6th Week Formation of prejudice at an early age and awareness of discrimination
7th Week Methods for developing cultural awareness and sensitivity
8th Week The role of families in multicultural education and school-family cooperation
9th Week Midterm Exam
10th Week Designing multicultural classroom environments and culturally representative materials
11th Week Examples of multicultural activities in early childhood education programs
12th Week Cultural representation and diversity in fairy tales, stories, and children's books
13th Week Representation of gender, ethnic identity, and differences in early childhood
