Course DescriptionThis course, which is based on theoretical explanation, aims to introduce the methods of observation, analyze, research and evaluation of the physical, functional, social, and visual characteristics of multi-layered cities. Within the scope of this course, a city with a rich historical background is examined and historical layers with different aspects defining these layers are revealed. In this process, students are expected to explore the layers of the city through written and visual sources, to make an assessment by researching on the urban texture, the elements composing the city, built-up-open space relationships, functional distributions and social-political-cultural-economic factors affecting the development of the city. It is aimed to reveal the features of the different layers of the city and to examine the continuity, transformation and change of these features over time. In addition, in the process of understanding the current context, which is the last layer of the historical stratification, it is considered to organize a field trip to the selected multi-layered city. This trip will also create an opportunity for students to question the relationship between historical layers and contemporary urban fabric. In the process of understanding the current context, which is the last layer of the historical stratification, a site trip to the selected multi-layered city is organized. This trip will also create an opportunity for students to question the relationship between historical layers and contemporary urban fabric. At the end of the course, students are expected to choose an area within the boundaries of the historic city, and to develop an idea either on the integration of the area with the city or on the presentation methods of its multi-layered character.
