Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Collect and evaluate data related to the architectural design problem and develop conceptual approaches.
  2. Assess the different contexts of the design problem by relating them to one another and utilize these relationships in generating architectural solutions.
  3. Develop a multifunctional, small-scale public architectural design that accommodates a diversified user group.
  4. Produce accessible and sustainable design solutions by discussing fundamental building physics concepts.
  5. Develop solutions that consider the building?s impact on nature and the built environment, while respecting cultural diversity.
  6. Enhances the ability to express design ideas and the architectural project both conceptually and technically.

Course DescriptionMIM 292 Design Studio II aims to develop students' abilities to conduct research, perform analysis, and generate architectural design solutions for a multifunctional, small-scale public architectural design problem characterized by a diversified user group. In this context, students are expected to relate different contexts to one another; to consider the physical and social layers of the built environment; to interpret the requirements program; and to produce sustainable solutions that address the public-scale problem holistically while responding to the evolving needs of diverse users. Throughout the process of developing architectural design solutions, the importance of questioning the building's impact on nature, its immediate surroundings, and regional identity is emphasized; in addition, fundamental building physics concepts ?such as indoor air quality and lighting? are discussed in relation to their significance for human health, safety, and comfort. While constructing the architectural design framework of a multifunctional public building intended for educational, cultural, healthcare, sports, or similar purposes, students develop an understanding of establishing a design theme; the relationships between human-space-function; spatial hierarchy; ergonomics; and the significance of open, semi-open, and enclosed space relationships, while at the same time enhancing their ability to express architectural design ideas both conceptually and technically.
