Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Collect and evaluate data related to the architectural design problem and develop conceptual approaches.
  2. Assess the different contexts of the design problem by establishing relationships between them and uses this understanding to generate creative and critical architectural solutions.
  3. Interpret the architectural program in accordance with the needs of the defined user group and reflects it in the design.
  4. Develop design solutions that consider the relationship between form and function, horizontal and vertical circulation, and the basic structural system in the architectural design process.
  5. Establish relationships between the building and its immediate surroundings by evaluating physical environmental data.
  6. Enhance the ability to express design ideas and the architectural project both conceptually and technically.

Course DescriptionMIM 291 Design Studio I aims to develop students' skills in gathering and evaluating information and developing architectural solutions to a defined design problem addressing the needs of a limited user group. Throughout the studio, students are expected to consider the physical and social layers of the built environment in the process of developing architectural design solutions, and to interpret the requirements program in order to produce a holistic response to a small-scale design problem. Simultaneously, students are expected to evaluate physical environmental data and establish the relationship between the building and its immediate surroundings. In this context, while producing solutions for user needs, students are also expected to establish the form-function relationship by considering the basic structural system and horizontal/vertical circulation. Students will understand the importance of creating a design theme, the human-space-function relationship, spatial hierarchy, scale perception, and the relationships between open/semi-open and closed spaces in architectural design, while also developing their ability to express architectural design ideas conceptually and technically.
