Course DescriptionThis course provides a historical overview of the more than half a century-long process between Turkey and the European Union (EU), focusing on the turning points in the relations. Starting with an examination of Turkey's relations with Europe within the framework of culture and identity, the developments from the Association Agreement of 1963 to the application for full membership in 1987, the EU's enlargement agenda, the Customs Union relationship between Turkey and the EU, the reform steps in domestic and foreign policy from the Helsinki Summit, when Turkey was accepted as a candidate country, to October 3, 2005, when accession negotiations started, will be examined in detail. The stagnant accession negotiations between Turkey and the EU, alternative membership models, areas of disagreement between the parties and Turkey's EU agenda will be evaluated in general. In this framework, scenarios for the future of the volatile relations that have been going on for years will also be discussed in the course.
