Course DescriptionThis course explores the key events, figures, and themes that have shaped the United States from its colonial beginnings to the present day. Examining the nation's political, social, and economic evolution, the course aims to provide students with critical insights into how historical events or movements (like the European colonization of the "New World", American Revolution, the Civil War, Reconstruction, industrialization, and urbanization of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the like) continue to impact contemporary issues in the United States. A particular emphasis will be placed on the concept of freedom and how its application has been both inclusive and selective throughout American history.
