Course DescriptionPreservation of the periodontal health of the treated patient requires a supportive program that is just as important as the therapy used to treat the periodontal disease. After phase I therapy has been completed, patients are placed on a schedule of periodic recall visits for maintenance care to prevent the recurrence of the disease. The long-term preservation of the dentition is closely associated with the frequency and quality of maintenance care. The therapist should use risk assessment and educate the patient on the need for periodontal maintenance. Supportive periodontal therapy is a lifetime effort to prevent the disease from recurring.
