Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. The purpose of this lesson is to examine the periodontal pathogenesis and to improve the management strategies for this common, complex disease.
  2. This course explains clinically healthy gingival tissues and histopathology of gingivitis and periodontitis
  3. This course explains inflammatory responses in the periodontium such as microbial virulence factors, host-derived ınflammatory mediators and role of specific ınflammatory mediators in periodontal disease
  4. This course covers linking pathogenesis to clinical signs of disease such as alveolar bone resorption
  5. This course examine resolution of inflammation
  6. This course defines immune responses in periodontal pathogenesis such as innate immunity and adaptive immunity.
  7. At the end of this course; the students learn periodontal pathogenesis of periodontal disease and concept of host susceptibility

Course DescriptionUnderstanding periodontal pathogenesis is key to improving management strategies for this common, complex disease. The first challenge is to understand exactly what is meant by the term pathogenesis. Periodontal pathogenesis means the step-by-step processes that lead to the development of the disease, resulting in a series of changes in the structure and function of, in this case, the periodontium. In broad terms, the pathogenesis of a disease is the mechanism by which an etiologic factor (or factors) causes the disease. The word derives from the Greek pathos (suffering, which is a now obsolete translation of pathos) and genesis (generation/creation).

Assessment Methods and Criteria Grading of the courses is determined by evaluating the midterm grades and the final exam grade together. The semester grades consist of the midterm exam grade and the grades given to the assignments, applications and practical studies depending on the course. The final evaluation is determined by one of the following letter grades by the instructor giving the course, taking into account the general success level of all students taking that course.
