Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Evaluates the physical, social, and economic impacts of earthquakes and discusses the professional and ethical responsibilities of architects within this context.
  2. Explains the behavior of structures under seismic effects and analyzes this behavior within the framework of fundamental principles of structural systems.
  3. Examines structural damages and defects occurring after earthquakes and establishes cause-effect relationships through case-based analysis.
  4. Explains the fundamental principles and concepts of earthquake-resistant building design; evaluates the relationship between the design of the load-bearing system and non-load-bearing elements and earthquake safety in line with architectural design decisions.
  5. In accordance with the relevant earthquake regulations, it evaluates the earthquake safety of a structure based on the soil-structure relationship and the characteristics of the load-bearing system.
  6. Explains innovative applications and structural strengthening techniques within the context of seismic safety.

Course DescriptionThis course aims to enable students to understand the physical, social, and economic impacts of earthquakes as well as the behavior of structures under seismic effects. The fundamental principles and approaches of earthquake-resistant design are introduced, and the relationships between architectural design decisions, the design of structural and non-structural elements, and seismic safety are evaluated. Additionally, the course aims to develop students? ability to assess the seismic safety of buildings in accordance with relevant regulations, understand professional and ethical responsibilities.
