Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students;

  1. Understand and analyze structural systems, the structural elements that constitute them, and their basic systems.
  2. Acquire theoretical and practical knowledge about structural systems and building materials.
  3. Comprehend the relationship between architectural design decisions and the structural system and foundation; evaluate the selection of materials, systems, and foundations compatible with the structural system in the context of the design and construction process.
  4. Using building materials, can express the positioning of structural system elements, their relationship with each other and with the ground, in accordance with technical principles, in a manner related to architectural design decisions.
  5. Analyzes the behavior of different structural systems and can develop structural solutions at the architectural level for these systems

Course DescriptionThis course examines the relationship between the architectural design process and structural systems through building materials and structural system principles. The course covers the basic properties of building materials, loads affecting structures, load transfer mechanisms, basic systems, the ground-structure relationship, and different types of structural systems. The basic principles of masonry, reinforced concrete, and steel frame systems are discussed theoretically and practically. Students are expected to develop structural solutions by analyzing the positioning of structural system elements within the system at the architectural level through the structures they design.
