  1. Students learn about the factors that led to the Tanzimat period.
  2. Students get to know the leading figures of the Tanzimat period.
  3. Students interpret Ottoman modernization through literary texts.

Course DescriptionThis course will provide on overview of Turkish literature from the Tanzimat period. Emphasis will be on the development of literary genres, the conflict between tradition modernity in the writers of the Tanzimat period and their works.
Course Contents

1st Week Presentation of the course, introduction to the course
2nd Week Tanzimat thought; political, social and cultural environment, the reasons preparing Tanzimat
3rd Week Tanzimat Edict; 1839-1860 period and changing mentality, pioneering movements in renewal, (schools, translations, newspapers) literary genres and features, pioneering personalities in renewal
4th Week Akif Paşa "Adem Kasidesi"
5th Week Innovations brought to Turkish poetry, Şinasi and his works: "Mustafa Reşit Paşa Kasidesi"
6th Week Public Holiday (Republic Day)
7th Week Şinasi and his works: "Şair Evlenmesi"
